Weather You Believe or Not

The top climatologist in America lives in our community. Speaking with him and his wife on a walk around the ridge recently, he offered this perspective, "We should stop referring to  environmental changes going on around us as "global warming." Since the temperature fluctuates so much in a given year, it's too easy for resisters to deny the overall trend. If we call it "global weirding", however  - well, I don't think there's anyone who would deny that."

So true. Headlines like this confirm his thought:

Shocking cold and snow in central U.S., first May snow on record in Arkansas, Washington Post, May 2013.

Mississippi River May Soon Be Unnavigable, Despite Army Geoengineers' Best Efforts, Real Clear Science, January 2013

New Wildfire Records Across U.S. in 2012, LA Times, August 2012

January 2012 Breaks Heat, Cold, Snow and Tornado Records, Accuweather.com, January 2012

What we can't control, we must adapt to. Luckily we're a pretty adaptable species. Let's just hope the forces we've set in conflict with mother nature aren't speeding faster than we can keep up.
